SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW: PATHWAYS TOWARD GLOBAL COOPERATION
Main Article Content
Abstract
Sustainable development has become a guiding principle in both international law and global governance. Rooted in the recognition that economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity must be pursued together, sustainable development now shapes treaties, policies, and legal frameworks worldwide. International environmental law plays a central role in operationalizing this principle, from climate change treaties and biodiversity conventions to global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet, achieving coherence and effectiveness in law remains a challenge, as fragmented agreements, disparities between developed and developing nations, and enforcement gaps continue to undermine progress. This article explores the historical evolution of sustainable development in law, reviews key international frameworks, analyzes regional and national strategies, and identifies the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. It argues that enhanced cooperation, stronger legal frameworks, and innovative governance mechanisms are essential to transform sustainable development from aspiration into practice.
