Abstract

This article explores various pedagogical approaches aimed at enhancing students' compensatory competence when learning German as a second foreign language. Developing this competence is crucial for overcoming communication breakdowns and fostering independent language use. We discuss strategies such as encouraging risk-taking, utilizing contextual clues, and employing circumlocution and paraphrasing techniques. The paper emphasizes the role of communicative tasks and problem-solving scenarios in creating authentic opportunities for students to practice and refine their compensatory skills. Effective integration of these approaches can significantly improve students' fluency, confidence, and overall communicative effectiveness in German.
